The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), established in July 1950 with headquarters in India, is an International Non-Governmental Organisation sponsored by the Government of India. Its mission is to stimulate and promote the development and application of the science and techniques of irrigation, drainage, flood control, and river training. The Commission comprises National Committees from each member country, starting with 11 members in 1950 and expanding to 64 countries today.

ICID is managed by an International Executive Council with representatives from each member country. This Council meets annually in different member countries to conduct business and initiate new policies and activities that further ICID’s objectives. Over its first 25 years, ICID has made significant contributions, holding nine successful Technical Congresses that highlighted the sciences of irrigation, drainage, and flood control. These congresses, along with ICID’s regular and special publications, have disseminated scientific knowledge and practical experience globally.

ICID has fostered cooperation among engineers and technicians from diverse countries and ideologies, promoting the sharing of expertise for the benefit of humanity. In celebration of ICID’s Silver Jubilee in July this year, the Posts & Telegraphs Department is pleased to issue a commemorative stamp to mark this significant milestone.
