The year 1968 holds significant importance as it has been designated by the U.N. General Assembly as the ‘International Year for Human Rights’, commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Adopted unanimously on December 10, 1948, the Declaration represented a landmark achievement in the promotion and protection of human rights globally, signifying a crucial step towards the realization of the principles outlined in the U.N. Charter.
Acknowledged by Secretary-General U Thant as second only to the U.N. Charter in embodying the world’s highest aspirations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights stands as a testament to the collective commitment to uphold the dignity and rights of every individual, irrespective of race, gender, language, or religion.
The General Assembly’s call for intensified efforts in the field of human rights during 1968 underscores the importance of promoting greater recognition and full enjoyment of fundamental freedoms for all. The theme for the year emphasizes universal respect for and observance of human rights, aiming to foster a culture of inclusivity and equality.
In alignment with the international initiative, the Government of India has decided to participate in celebrating the International Year for Human Rights. A national committee has been formed to coordinate activities across the country, including the dissemination of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through various means. Universities and educational institutions will actively engage in organizing talks, lectures, debates, seminars, and essay competitions to raise awareness and promote dialogue on human rights issues.
The Posts and Telegraphs Department is pleased to mark the commencement of the year by issuing a special postage stamp, symbolizing India’s commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.
