Saint, Scholar and Social Reformer
Early Life
Jaimalji Maharaj was born in 1708 AD in the Lambiya Province of Merta Pargana, Rajasthan, to Smt. Mahima Devi and Shri Mohandas Samodaiya Mehta. From a very young age, Jaimalji displayed qualities of intelligence, gentleness and compassion. Though he initially assisted his father in the family business and entered married life, his inner calling was towards spiritual pursuit rather than worldly engagements.
Spiritual Awakening and Monkhood
A chance encounter with Acharya Bhudhari proved to be a turning point in Jaimalji’s life. The Acharya’s discourse awakened in him a deep desire for renunciation. Recognizing his spiritual potential and future contribution to society, Acharya Bhudhari permitted Jaimalji to adopt the path of Monkhood.
Jaimalji devoted his life to the practice of the Three Jewels of Jainism—
Right Faith, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct—and followed them unwaveringly throughout his life.
Scholarly Pursuits
Jaimalji Maharaj was a scholar of exceptional breadth. He studied and mastered Jain Agamas, Vedas, Vedangas, Puranas, Buddhist scriptures, and texts of various other religious traditions, reflecting his inclusive and universal outlook toward knowledge and spirituality.
Social Reformer and Visionary
Beyond spiritual leadership, Jaimalji Maharaj was a progressive social reformer. He worked tirelessly for the upliftment of women and, through his discourses, strongly opposed social evils such as female infanticide, sati, and child marriage.
