Saint, Scholar and Social Reformer
Vallabh Suri stands as a shining example of humanism, spiritual wisdom and social reform within the Jain tradition. His life was dedicated not only to religious teaching but also to education, national service and social upliftment.
Early Life and Spiritual Journey
Born as Chhagan in November 1870 in Vadodara, Gujarat, to Deepchand and Icchabai, he showed spiritual inclination from a young age. In search of deeper meaning and peace, he became a disciple of Vijayanand Suri, popularly known as Guru Atmaramji, a highly revered Jain saint and scholar.
At the age of 17, in 1887, he renounced worldly life at Radhanpur (Gujarat) and was initiated into monkhood, receiving the name Muni Vallabh Vijay. Under the guidance of his Guru, he mastered Jain philosophy as propounded by Mahavira, embracing the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekant (non-absolutism), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). He also studied contemporary religions, reflecting his broad and inclusive outlook.
In 1924, at Lahore (now in Pakistan), he was bestowed with Acharyaship and came to be known as Jainacharya Vallabh Suri.
Advocate of Education and Social Reform
True to his Guru’s vision, Acharyashree emphasized that religion must be accompanied by education and service. He worked tirelessly to eradicate ignorance, superstition and illiteracy across communities, irrespective of caste, class or creed.
He especially promoted women’s education at a time when it faced resistance. To counter fears that modern education would erode cultural values, he famously compared education to electricity — powerful and beneficial when used responsibly.
Among the notable institutions inspired by his vision are:
- Shri Mahavira Jaina Vidyalaya (established in 1915, Mumbai)
- Shri Atmanand Jain Gurukul
- Shri Atmanand Jain College
He encouraged the establishment of numerous schools, colleges, gurukuls, libraries and centres of learning across India.
Preservation of Knowledge and Literature
An ardent scholar and researcher, Acharyashree played a key role in collecting and preserving thousands of rare handwritten manuscripts and works on Indology. These collections became invaluable repositories of India’s cultural and philosophical heritage.
He was also a prolific writer and poet, composing nearly 1600 poems, hymns and songs in Hindi, in addition to several prose works. His literary contributions reflected both spiritual depth and national consciousness.
Patriotism and Role in Freedom Movement
A patriot at heart, Acharyashree identified himself with India’s freedom struggle. He wore khadi throughout his life and supported Swadeshi ideals. He advocated Satyagraha and non-cooperation as powerful yet non-violent tools for independence.
He interacted with prominent national leaders such as:
- Mahatma Gandhi
- Motilal Nehru
- Morarji Desai
- Jawaharlal Nehru
His 14-point peace formula, appreciated by national leaders, influenced thinking that later aligned with principles similar to the Panchsheel doctrine.
Core Philosophy and Legacy
For the holistic development of society, Jainacharya Vallabh Suri adopted five guiding principles:
- Shiksha (Education)
- Seva (Service)
- Sangathan (Unity)
- Sahitya (Literature)
- Swavlamban (Self-reliance)
He travelled extensively across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir — always barefoot, as prescribed for Jain monks — spreading messages of morality, peace and social harmony.
Jainacharya Vallabh Suri Ji Maharaj remains remembered as a visionary saint who harmonized spirituality with social responsibility and national service.
In recognition of his immense contributions, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp honoring Jainacharya Vallabh Suri — celebrating his enduring legacy in religion, education and nation-building.
