Introduction
Jawaharlal Darda was a distinguished freedom fighter, journalist, and political leader from Maharashtra. Known for his dedication to public service and people-oriented journalism, he played an important role in social, political, and economic development in the state. He was widely respected for his commitment to nationalism and social welfare.
Early Life and Freedom Struggle
Jawaharlal Darda was born on 2 July 1923 in Babhulgaon in the Yavatmal district to Shri Amolchand and Smt. Kusumba. At the young age of 17, he joined India’s freedom struggle.
He actively participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and was imprisoned by the British colonial authorities for his involvement. During this period, he also undertook a remarkable 400-mile padyatra to spread the spirit of nationalism.
Contribution to Journalism
In 1947, Jawaharlal Darda founded the weekly newspaper Nave Jag in Yavatmal to promote national consciousness. Later, in 1952, he launched the Marathi weekly Lokmat, which eventually became a daily newspaper in 1971.
Over time, Lokmat grew into one of the leading newspaper groups in Maharashtra, publishing editions from several cities in the state as well as English and Hindi editions.
Political Career and Public Service
Jawaharlal Darda served as President of the Yavatmal District Congress Committee from 1944 to 1956. He was deeply involved in social movements, including the Bhoodan Movement led by Vinoba Bhave, during which large areas of land were donated in Yavatmal district.
He later served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1972 to 1995. As a minister in the Maharashtra government, he handled several important portfolios including energy, industry, irrigation, health, food and civil supplies, sports, youth affairs, textiles, and environment.
Social and Educational Initiatives
Jawaharlal Darda played a major role in promoting co-operative and agricultural movements in Maharashtra. He established Amolchand Darda Mahavidyalaya, which runs several colleges and educational institutions in the Vidarbha region.
He also served as Chairman of the Maharashtra State Housing Finance Corporation, contributing to housing development in the state.
Development Initiatives
Popularly known as “Babuji,” Jawaharlal Darda worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the poor and marginalized sections of society. During his tenure, he promoted expansion of the Koradi Thermal Power Station near Nagpur to strengthen the energy sector.
He also supported the introduction of a new industrial policy, which helped accelerate industrial growth in Maharashtra. His contributions to development earned him the title “Vikas Purush” for his efforts in strengthening the state’s economy.
Legacy
Jawaharlal Darda passed away on 25 November 1997 in Mumbai. His dedication to journalism, public service, and social development left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire future generations.

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to freedom struggle, journalism, and public life, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Jawaharlal Darda.
