Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium – Delhi
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi, was constructed to host the 9th Asian Games in 1982 and has since emerged as one of India’s premier multi-purpose sports arenas. Role in the 2010 Commonwealth Games
The stadium served as the main venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, held from 3rd to 14th October 2010 in Delhi. In preparation for the XIX Commonwealth Games, the stadium underwent significant modernization and expansion, including:
- Development of four synthetic greens for Lawn Bowls events
- Construction of a 2,500-seat gymnasium for weightlifting competitions
- A 150-metre-long tunnel built to facilitate the grand opening and closing ceremonies, as well as athletics events
These upgrades reinforced the stadium’s status as a world-class sporting venue capable of hosting international mega-events.
