The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi, was constructed to host the 9th Asian Games in 1982 and has since emerged as one of India’s premier multi-purpose sports arenas. Designed to stage football matches, athletics competitions, and large-scale entertainment events, the stadium stands as a landmark in India’s sporting history.

With a seating capacity of approximately 75,000 spectators, it ranks among the largest stadiums in India and is counted among the notable large-capacity stadiums worldwide.

Role in the 2010 Commonwealth Games

The stadium served as the main venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, held from 3rd to 14th October 2010 in Delhi. In preparation for the XIX Commonwealth Games, the stadium underwent significant modernization and expansion, including:

• Development of four synthetic greens for Lawn Bowls events
• Construction of a 2,500-seat gymnasium for weightlifting competitions
• A 150-metre-long tunnel built to facilitate the grand opening and closing ceremonies, as well as athletics events

These upgrades reinforced the stadium’s status as a world-class sporting venue capable of hosting international mega-events.
