Scholar, Social Thinker and Champion of Tamil
K. A. P. Viswanatham was born on 10 November 1899 in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu to Shri Periyanna Pillai and Smt. Subbammal. Though he had no formal schooling, his intellectual journey began early — he learned to write the Tamil alphabet at the age of five and, through sheer determination and self-study, mastered Tamil literature.
Scholar of Tamil and Advocate of Siddha Medicine
A passionate scholar, Viswanatham devoted his life to the promotion and preservation of Tamil language and culture. His deep love for Tamil literature was entirely self-cultivated, reflecting his extraordinary discipline and dedication.
He was also a firm believer in Siddha medicine, one of India’s ancient systems of healing evolved by the Siddhars. Learning directly from traditional practitioners, he undertook extensive research in the field and authored several treatises on Siddha medicine, contributing to its documentation and propagation.
Architect of Tamil Advancement
Through his persistent efforts, the establishment of Tamil University at Thanjavur became a reality. The university was created exclusively to promote advanced research and development of the Tamil language, literature, and culture — a testament to his lifelong mission.
His scholarship and advocacy took him beyond India’s shores. He visited Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, France, Arab countries, Germany, and England, spreading awareness of Tamil heritage and engaging with global audiences.
Social Reformer and Recognition
Shri K.A.P. Viswanatham was not only a literary figure but also a committed social thinker. He worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the downtrodden and championed social reform. In recognition of his remarkable contributions to Tamil literature and society, two universities conferred honorary doctorates upon him and inducted him into their respective senates.
He passed away on 19 December 1994, leaving behind a rich legacy of scholarship, social reform, and cultural pride.
To honour his invaluable service to society and his lasting contribution to Tamil language and heritage, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in his memory.
