Early Life

Kanwar Ram Sahib was born in April 1885 in Jarwar village of Sukkur District in Sindh (now in Pakistan) to devout and pious parents. The name “Kanwar Ram” in Sindhi signifies the “lotus,” symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening.

Spiritual Message and Musical Legacy

Kanwar Ram Sahib emerged as a spiritual luminary among the Sindhi people, advocating peace, nonviolence, and communal harmony. Gifted with a divine voice, he popularized “Bhagat,” a traditional Sindhi folk art form that blends storytelling with song, dance, and drama. He infused devotional singing with renewed vigor and gave a distinctive direction to Sindhi Sufi lyrical folk music.

His universal message of love, unity, and peace transcended barriers of caste, colour, creed, and religion, touching countless hearts. Through music and devotion, he brought together diverse communities under a shared spiritual ethos.

Life of Simplicity and Service

A humble and compassionate soul, Kanwar Ram Sahib believed that God resided in the poor and downtrodden. Devotees often offered him money and jewels during his performances, but he distributed all such offerings among the needy, destitute, and disabled. For his own sustenance, he sold cooked grams and lived a life of remarkable simplicity, often sleeping on the ground on a coarse sheet of cloth.

Meditation and music were integral to his spiritual discipline. At times, he would withdraw into seclusion for days, entering deep states of meditation. During such moments, he would go into a trance, tears flowing as he immersed himself in divine contemplation.

Teacher and Influence

He was a devoted disciple of Sant Satramdas. Through his art, he placed Sindh prominently on the multilingual music scene. His melodious voice attracted admirers from far and wide; it is said that a renowned professional singer from Kolkata travelled all the way to Sindh to hear his soulful Aalap of Sindhi Lolhi (lullaby). His songs continue to live on as a priceless spiritual heritage among the Sindhi community.

Martyrdom and Legacy

Kanwar Ram Sahib always upheld truth and inspired others to practice honesty, believing that integrity brings one closer to the Almighty. He worked tirelessly to foster unity between Sindhi Hindus and Muslims and opposed British rule.

On 31 October 1939, he was assassinated inside a train compartment at RUK Railway Station, attaining martyrdom for his ideals. Numerous elegies were composed in his memory, honouring his life of devotion and sacrifice.

In recognition of his enduring spiritual and cultural legacy, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp on Kanwar Ram Sahib, paying tribute to this saint and martyr of peace and harmony.
