The establishment of Kashi Vidyapith marks a significant chapter in the history of Indian education. In the early days of the freedom struggle, there was a growing sentiment among nationalistic-minded Indians for the need to create a truly national institution that would impart education aligned with the progressive ideals of the nation. This institution aimed to provide higher cultural education through the medium of the mother tongue, designed to nurture the character of young Indians.

The idea gained momentum during the special session of the Indian National Congress in Calcutta in 1920 when the non-cooperation program was adopted. As part of this program, students were encouraged to withdraw from government and semi-government educational institutions. In line with this, some students established a Gandhi Ashram in Varanasi and simultaneously worked on plans to start an independent national institution.

After the Nagpur Session of the Congress in January 1921, Mahatma Gandhi expressed his desire for the early opening of a national college in Varanasi. With great speed, preparations were made, and Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated Kashi Vidyapith on February 10, 1921, in the presence of prominent leaders and patriotic Indians.

The administration of Kashi Vidyapith was vested in a Niraksharta Sabha to ensure its independence from governmental control and political activities. The institution adopted principles such as Hindi as the medium of instruction in Devnagari script and the incorporation of technical education alongside cultural education.

Throughout its history, Kashi Vidyapith remained actively involved in the freedom movement of India, with students and staff participating in various struggles and facing repression from the British government. Despite challenges, the institution produced numerous distinguished individuals who played significant roles in the public life of India.

Over the years, Kashi Vidyapith expanded its offerings, including postgraduate courses in various disciplines, and gained recognition from governments and universities for its degrees. In July 1962, it was officially granted university status under the Universities Grants Commission Act by the Government of India.

As Kashi Vidyapith celebrates its Golden Jubilee, it stands as a testament to its dedication to education and character-building based on nationalistic ideals. The Posts and Telegraphs Department congratulates Kashi Vidyapith on 50 years of service to education and commemorates this milestone by issuing a special commemorative stamp.
