Early Life and Background
Ramchandra Narayanji Dwivedi, popularly known as Kavi Pradeep, was born on 06 February 1915 in a middle-class family in the small town of Badnagar, in present-day Madhya Pradesh. From an early age, he displayed a deep passion for writing Hindi prose and poetry, which later defined his literary and artistic journey.
Education and Literary Beginnings
While pursuing his graduation at the University of Lucknow, Pradeep actively participated in Kavi Sammelans, where he recited Hindi poetry in his distinctive and captivating style. It was during this formative phase that he adopted the pen name ‘Pradeep’, under which he would later achieve national recognition.
Journey into Film Lyric Writing
After completing his graduation, Kavi Pradeep moved to Bombay (now Mumbai), where he began his illustrious career as a film lyricist. He soon became renowned for writing songs imbued with patriotism, social consciousness, and simplicity of language.

During the Indo-China War of 1962, the bravery and supreme sacrifice of Major Shaitan Singh deeply moved Kavi Pradeep. Inspired by this heroism, he penned the iconic patriotic song “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon”.
The song was rendered by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar as a tribute to India’s soldiers. Its emotional power was such that it moved Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to tears, etching the song permanently into the nation’s collective memory.
Literary Output and Achievements
Over his lifetime, Kavi Pradeep wrote approximately 1,700 songs for more than 85 Hindi films, the majority of which carried a strong patriotic fervour. He emerged as one of the most legendary lyricists in Hindi cinema.
