A Legacy of Excellence in School Education
Introduction to Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS)
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) is an autonomous educational body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India. Established from the Central School Organization scheme of 1962, KVS was created to meet the educational needs of children of transferable Central Government employees—particularly those in Defence and Para-military services.
KVS officially came into existence on 15 December 1965, evolving from 20 Regimental Schools initially converted into Central Schools in 1963–64.
Growth and Expansion Across India
From its modest beginning, KVS has grown into one of the largest school networks in the world. By 2013, the Sangathan operated 1,093 schools across India and abroad, serving approximately 10.58 lakh students and supported by nearly 48,918 teachers and staff.
To ensure smooth functioning, KVS follows a three-tier administrative structure:
- Headquarters
- Regional Offices, each overseeing 45–50 schools
- Individual Kendriya Vidyalayas, each governed by a local management committee
The Minister of Human Resource Development heads both the General Body and the Board of Governors, supported by educationists, administrators, and Members of Parliament.
Mission and Educational Philosophy
KVS continues to uphold its mission of providing quality education to children of transferable Central Government employees while setting national standards in school-level academics. Its objectives include:
- Achieving academic excellence
- Encouraging innovation and experimentation in teaching
- Promoting national integration
- Instilling a deep sense of “Indianness” in students
Through its inclusive and structured framework, KVS has become synonymous with discipline, consistency, and holistic education.
Academic Strength and Infrastructure
All Kendriya Vidyalayas are co-educational schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). They offer a uniform curriculum across all locations, ensuring continuity for children who move frequently due to their parents’ transfers.
KVS schools are equipped with:
- Spacious classrooms
- Science and mathematics laboratories
- Libraries
- Computer labs
- Resource rooms
- Sports and activity facilities
To encourage learning without financial barriers, KVS follows a student-friendly fee structure—charging no tuition fee for boys up to Class VIII, girls up to Class XII, single girl children, and students admitted under the RTE Act, 2009. KVS also introduced foreign languages such as German, French, and Chinese from Class VI onwards.
Holistic Development and Co-Curricular Opportunities
KVS nurtures the all-round growth of its students through academics, music, visual and performing arts, sports, and a range of competitions. Its primary curriculum is designed to be child-friendly and activity-based.
With its national network, the Sangathan is recognized as a ‘state’ for participation in national-level science, sports, and cultural competitions—offering students a platform to showcase their talents at a larger scale.
Commemorating KVS Through Postage Stamps
To honour its remarkable contribution to the nation’s educational landscape, a commemorative postage stamp on Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan was issued.
This stamp celebrates the ethos, growth, and transformative role of KVS in shaping generations of learners across India. Like every philatelic tribute, it encapsulates a story—of classrooms filled with possibility, teachers inspiring young minds, and a visionary system that continues to evolve with the nation.
