Gandhian Leader and Former Vice-President of India
Krishan Kant was a respected Gandhian thinker, eminent parliamentarian, and visionary leader who played a significant role in India’s political and social life. Known for his integrity, commitment to democratic values, and dedication to public service, he remained an influential figure in Indian politics for several decades.
Early Life and Family Background
Krishan Kant was born on 28 February 1927 in Punjab into a family deeply involved in India’s freedom struggle. His father, Lala Achint Ram, was a member of the Constituent Assembly of India and later served as a Member of Parliament. He was also a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress and played a key role in the Bhoodan Movement in Punjab.
His mother, Satya Vati, was also an active freedom fighter and one of the longest-living participants of India’s independence movement.
Education and Early Career
Krishan Kant received his education at D.A.V. College Lahore and later at Banaras Hindu University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Technology.
He began his professional career as a scientist with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. Even during this period, he strongly believed in integrating science with spirituality, reflecting his balanced intellectual outlook.
Participation in the Freedom Struggle
Inspired by his parents’ patriotic ideals, Krishan Kant joined the independence movement at the young age of 15. During the Quit India Movement, he actively participated in protests and was imprisoned by the British authorities for his involvement.
Parliamentary Career
After India gained independence, Krishan Kant entered parliamentary politics. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1966 and served there for 11 years. Later, he was elected to the Lok Sabha, where he served until 1980.
A gifted speaker and energetic leader, he became widely known as one of the “Young Turks” of Indian politics—leaders recognized for their progressive ideas and bold political views.
Governor of Andhra Pradesh
On 7 February 1990, Krishan Kant was appointed Governor of Andhra Pradesh. During his tenure, he strongly advocated for:
- Empowerment of Dalits and marginalized communities
- Women’s empowerment
- Prohibition and social reform
He also initiated innovative socio-spiritual initiatives by establishing Satya Mandirs, where people could gather to discuss and resolve social issues in an atmosphere guided by truth and harmony.
Vice-President of India
Krishan Kant reached the pinnacle of his public career when he became the Vice-President of India on 21 August 1997. As Vice-President, he also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
His tenure was widely appreciated for its fairness and dignity. Known for his wit and calm demeanor, he often eased tense parliamentary debates with thoughtful humor while maintaining strict impartiality.
He served in this office until his passing on 27 July 2002.
Contributions to Civil Liberties and Social Causes
Krishan Kant was deeply sensitive to social and political issues. He was the founding General Secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, an organization dedicated to protecting democratic rights.
He also served as President of the Servants of the People Society, which had been established by Lala Lajpat Rai.
Literary and Cultural Interests
Apart from his political and social work, Krishan Kant had a deep appreciation for literature and culture. He was particularly fond of Urdu poetry and contributed extensively to newspapers and journals on topics such as:
