A Tradition of Excellence in Education
Foundation and Vision
La Martiniere School, Kolkata, was established in 1836, along with two schools in Lucknow and one in Lyons, France, through a generous endowment by French Major General Claude Martin. The founder’s vision was to provide a holistic education that would shape children into responsible, enlightened and worthy citizens of society.
Growth and Enduring Legacy
Since its inception, La Martiniere has continued to fulfil its founder’s vision by offering quality education supported by residential facilities through a trust fund created by Claude Martin. One of the most distinguished alumni of La Martiniere was Sir Paul Charter, the founder of modern Hong Kong, who later became a generous benefactor of the institution.
Educational Philosophy
The education system at La Martiniere represents a unique blend of global outlook and strong local roots. Students are encouraged to develop an international perspective while remaining firmly grounded in India’s cultural heritage, values and traditions.
Environmental Awareness
The Nature Club of La Martiniere plays an active role in creating environmental consciousness among students. Its initiatives include preservation of natural resources, removal of graffiti from city walls and contributions to the Kolkata Zoo for the welfare of animals.
Community Service Initiatives
The Interact Club, affiliated with the Rotary Club of India, enables students to participate in meaningful community service. The club works closely with organisations such as Manovikas Kendra for differently-abled children, Little Sisters of the Poor for the elderly, and Cini Asha for underprivileged children.
Vocational Training and Social Outreach
La Martiniere funds and administers SEOMP (Self Employment Oriented Multipurpose Project), a vocational training programme aimed at adults who could not complete formal education. The project provides training in crafts and technical skills, enabling participants to gain employment and become self-reliant.
Founder’s Humanitarian Vision
Beyond education, Claude Martin demonstrated deep social concern by creating a fund for the rehabilitation of convicts, enabling them to re-enter mainstream society—an initiative remarkable for its time.
Contribution to Society
Over the years, alumni of La Martiniere Schools have excelled in diverse fields such as sports, administration, social service, politics and journalism, reflecting the institution’s commitment to nurturing individuals of character and substance.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
In recognition of its outstanding contribution to education and society, India Post is pleased to issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp on La Martiniere Schools.
