Lalit Kala Academy

The vision of independent India’s cultural renaissance was strongly shaped by the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The Akademi was inaugurated on 5 August 1954 by Abul Kalam Azad, the then Union Minister for Education. In his inaugural address, he articulated its mission:

“The objective of Lalit Kala Akademi is to preserve the glorious traditions of the past and enrich them by the work of our modern artists. It must also seek to improve standards and refine public taste.”

This statement continues to guide the Akademi’s commitment to artistic excellence.

Role and Autonomy

Lalit Kala Akademi functions as an autonomous organization fully funded by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It enjoys substantial independence in:
