The Elegant Spider Shell

Lambis lambis, popularly known as the Spider Shell, is one of the most visually striking marine species featured in the commemorative stamp series on the biodiversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Distribution and Habitat

Lambis lambis is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific region, thriving in both shallow and moderately deep waters. It is commonly seen around coral reefs and rocky seabeds, where it adapts well to marine environments rich in biodiversity.

Distinctive Physical Features

This species is easily recognizable due to its unique and dramatic shell structure, growing up to 200 mm in size. Its key characteristics include:

  • Six long, finger-like spines extending from the outer lip
  • A deep body whorl with well-defined contours
  • A wide stromboid notch on the dorsal side
  • A creamy-white base colour, richly patterned with brown and purple-brown markings

These features give the shell its “spider-like” appearance, making it one of the most admired shells in the marine world.

Ecological Importance

Like other molluscs, Lambis lambis is highly sensitive to environmental changes, especially pollution. Its presence in the waters of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands indicates a healthy and relatively unspoiled marine ecosystem.

Molluscs play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance and serve as indicators of ocean health.

Representation in Commemorative Stamp

To promote awareness of marine conservation, the Department of Posts featured Lambis lambis in its commemorative stamp series.

The stamp:

  • Highlights the shell’s unique and artistic form
  • Celebrates marine biodiversity
  • Encourages efforts to protect fragile ocean habitats

A Symbol of Marine Beauty and Fragility

Lambis lambis stands as a symbol of the elegance and diversity of ocean life. Its inclusion in the commemorative stamp series serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving marine ecosystems and safeguarding these natural wonders for future generations.
