World’s First Hospital Train in India
The Jeevan Rekha Express, popularly known as the Life Line Express, is the world’s first hospital on rails. A pioneering healthcare initiative, it is a collaborative project between the Impact India Foundation, Indian Railways, and the Ministry of Health. This innovative train brings advanced medical and surgical services to remote, rural, and tribal regions of India where healthcare access is limited.
A Fully Equipped Hospital on Rails
The Life Line Express is a self-contained, mobile medical facility designed to deliver quality healthcare free of cost. The train includes:
- Two fully functional operation theatres
- Post-operative recovery rooms
- Laboratory and X-ray facilities
- An auditorium for medical workshops
- TV and LCD projection systems
- CCTV connectivity with the main operation theatre
- Generators and other essential support systems
A unique feature of the train is that the coach housing the second operation theatre can be detached and operated independently. This flexibility makes it highly valuable for disaster management and emergency response situations.
Delivering Free Medical Care to Rural India
The primary mission of the Jeevan Rekha Express is to provide free medical and surgical treatment to persons with disabilities and other serious medical conditions in underserved rural and tribal areas.
Each project typically runs for about four weeks at a selected location. However, preparations begin several weeks in advance. Through government health networks and local outreach efforts, information about the free surgeries reaches nearly one million people in surrounding regions.
- State-run primary health centres screen around 25,000 individuals
- Eligible patients are selected for surgery
- Approximately 6,000 people are diagnosed onboard the train
Local volunteers play a crucial role in mobilizing patients and managing boarding and lodging arrangements for patients and their attendants.
Large-Scale Impact and Medical Outreach
Between its two operation theatres, the train houses five operating tables, allowing simultaneous surgeries of similar types. This maximizes efficiency and ensures that a large number of patients receive treatment within a short time frame.
The innovation of the Life Line Express lies in leveraging India’s vast railway network of over 75,000 kilometres to deliver healthcare directly to remote communities.
To date, the train has completed 93 sponsored projects, each lasting around five weeks. Its remarkable achievements include:
- Medical services provided to over 450,000 people
- Approximately 70,000 surgeries performed
- Services delivered entirely free of cost
- Participation of over 75,000 surgeons and medical professionals from India and abroad
- Support from numerous national and international volunteers
Transforming Rural Healthcare in India
By delivering high-quality surgical care to the poorest sections of society, the Jeevan Rekha Express has significantly improved healthcare accessibility in rural India. Beyond medical treatment, the project enhances awareness, restores dignity, and strengthens trust in public health services.
In recognition of this extraordinary healthcare initiative, a commemorative postage stamp was issued to honor the Jeevan Rekha Express — a symbol of innovation, compassion, and service to humanity.
