Nationalist, Scholar and Champion of Tamil

Ma. Po. Sivagnanam was a devoted nationalist, freedom fighter, eminent Tamil scholar, and prolific writer who made outstanding contributions to India’s freedom movement and to the development of Tamil language and literature. Early Life and Struggles

Ma. Po. Sivagnanam was born on 26 June 1906 in Chennai to Shri Ponnusamy Giramini and Smt. Sivagami. Due to financial difficulties, he had to discontinue his formal education at an early age and began working as a labourer. Despite these hardships, he developed a deep interest in Tamil literature and national service.

Participation in the Freedom Movement

In 1927, he joined the Indian National Congress and soon became actively involved in the struggle for independence. He participated in protests against the Simon Commission Protests.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Sivagnanam took part in the Salt Satyagraha in Chennai under the leadership of Tanguturi Prakasam. He was later imprisoned in 1940 for participating in the Individual Satyagraha movement and again in 1942 for his role in the Quit India Movement.

In 1946, Ma. Po. Sivagnanam founded the Tamil Arasu Kazhagam. The organization played a significant role in the movement for the reorganization of states on linguistic lines and the formation of Tamil Nadu as a separate state.

  • Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council (1952)
  • Member of the Legislative Assembly (1967–1971)
  • Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council
