Nationalist, Scholar and Champion of Tamil
Ma. Po. Sivagnanam was a devoted nationalist, freedom fighter, eminent Tamil scholar, and prolific writer who made outstanding contributions to India’s freedom movement and to the development of Tamil language and literature. Through his political activism, literary works, and social initiatives, he left a lasting impact on Tamil society and culture.
Early Life and Struggles
Ma. Po. Sivagnanam was born on 26 June 1906 in Chennai to Shri Ponnusamy Giramini and Smt. Sivagami. Due to financial difficulties, he had to discontinue his formal education at an early age and began working as a labourer. Despite these hardships, he developed a deep interest in Tamil literature and national service.
Participation in the Freedom Movement
In 1927, he joined the Indian National Congress and soon became actively involved in the struggle for independence. He participated in protests against the Simon Commission Protests.
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Sivagnanam took part in the Salt Satyagraha in Chennai under the leadership of Tanguturi Prakasam. He was later imprisoned in 1940 for participating in the Individual Satyagraha movement and again in 1942 for his role in the Quit India Movement.
Political and Social Leadership
In 1946, Ma. Po. Sivagnanam founded the Tamil Arasu Kazhagam. The organization played a significant role in the movement for the reorganization of states on linguistic lines and the formation of Tamil Nadu as a separate state.
He also worked actively for the inclusion of Tiruttani taluk and several taluks of Travancore–Cochin with Tamil Nadu and for retaining Madras (Chennai) within the state when Andhra Pradesh was formed.
Sivagnanam served public life in several roles:
- Alderman of the Corporation of Madras (two terms until 1952)
- Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council (1952)
- Member of the Legislative Assembly (1967–1971)
- Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council
Literary Contributions
Ma. Po. Sivagnanam was also a distinguished writer, publisher, and editor. He authored more than 150 books in Tamil, covering history, literature, and nationalist themes. Some of his notable works include:

Journalism and Academic Contributions
In 1934, Sivagnanam founded the magazine “Gramini Kulam.” He also served as editor for several publications including Bharathi, Tamil Murasu, Tamilzhan Kural, and Sengol.
His academic contributions earned him positions in major universities. He served as a member of the Senate and Syndicate of the University of Madras, and was also associated with the Senates of Madurai Kamaraj University, Annamalai University, and Tamil University, Thanjavur. Additionally, he chaired the High Level Committee for Development of Tamil set up by the Tamil Nadu Government.
Honors and Recognition
Ma. Po. Sivagnanam received numerous honors for his contributions to literature and society. He was conferred the title “Silambu Chelvar” in 1950 by the renowned Tamil scholar R. P. Sethu Pillai on behalf of the Tamil Writers Association.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 for his services to literature and education and the title “Kalaimamani” in 1976 by the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram. He also received the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature from the University of Madras and Annamalai University.
Legacy and Commemoration
Ma. Po. Sivagnanam passed away on 3 October 1995, leaving behind an enduring legacy of scholarship, patriotism, and dedication to the Tamil language and culture.
To honor his remarkable contributions, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in his memory, celebrating the life of a visionary leader whose work enriched Tamil literature and strengthened the spirit of Indian nationalism.
