A Pioneer of Education and Social Reform

Mahatma Hansraj stands as a towering figure in the history of Indian education and social reform, remembered for his lifelong dedication to uplifting society through selfless service. The DAV College Trust & Management Society, founded in 1886 by socially conscious individuals in Lahore, was established in honor of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, a visionary of the Indian Renaissance. The first institution under this trust—DAV School—marked the beginning of a new era in Indian education, driven by nationalistic ideals and a deep sense of duty toward the masses.

Early Life and Commitment to Education

Born on April 19, 1864, in a modest family in Bajwara near Hoshiarpur, Punjab, Hansraj displayed an early passion for learning. After completing his education and securing a degree from Panjab University College, Lahore, he could have pursued a stable government job. Instead, he chose to dedicate his life to the noble cause of education, accepting the role of Head Master of DAV School in 1889.

Inspired by the teachings of Arya Samaj and the ideals of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Mahatma Hansraj committed himself to building an indigenous system of education that emphasized moral values, self-discipline, and nationalism. Despite facing financial hardships, he took pride in serving society, famously sacrificing personal comforts for the greater good.

Contributions to Social and Moral Reform

Mahatma Hansraj’s contribution extended far beyond the classroom. A staunch advocate for eradicating social evils such as casteism, child marriage, female infanticide, and perpetual widowhood (sati pratha), he believed that education was a powerful tool for social transformation.

During times of national crises—earthquakes, famines, floods, epidemics, and communal riots—Mahatma Hansraj provided invaluable service, embodying the spirit of compassion and humanity. His relentless efforts earned him the affectionate title of Mahatma, a testament to his selfless dedication.

Leadership and Legacy

As President of the DAV College Managing Committee for 7 years and President of the Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Sabha for 45 years, Mahatma Hansraj influenced the shaping of India’s educational landscape. He played a pivotal role in the expansion of DAV institutions, which today boast over 1000 campuses, continuing his vision of enlightening future generations.

His teachings remain a guiding light, blending simplicity with profound moral and spiritual insight. Mahatma Hansraj’s life exemplified the values of honesty, sacrifice, service, and self-help, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to inspire.
