Early Life and Education
Manikchandra Vajpayee, affectionately known as “Mama ji”, was born on 7 October 1919 in Bateshwar, district Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his education from Morar, Gwalior, where his academic brilliance became evident early on. He secured first position in the Middle Board Examination of the Gwalior State and was awarded a Gold Medal in the Inter Ajmer Board Examination, marking him as an outstanding scholar.
Commitment to Social and National Service
Manikchandra Vajpayee led a selfless life of service, remaining actively engaged in social and national causes till his last breath. From 1944 to 1953, he served as a Pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), dedicating himself to organizational and ideological work.
He played a pioneering role in the establishment of a college at Adokhar (Bhind) and contributed significantly to nation-building initiatives. He served as the Convener for Central India of Swadeshi Jagran Manch and as the Organisational Secretary for Central India of the Jansangh between 1951 and 1954, strengthening grassroots movements rooted in Indian values.
Distinguished Career in Journalism
Manikchandra Vajpayee began his journalistic journey as the editor of the weekly “Deshmitra”, published from Bhind. His career reached greater heights with his association with ‘Dainik Swadesh’, Indore, from its inception in 1966. He served as its Editor from 1968 to 1985, shaping the newspaper into a respected voice of responsible journalism.
Later, as Editorial Advisor to the Bhopal, Jabalpur, Sagar, Raipur, and Bilaspur editions of ‘Swadesh’, he mentored and guided generations of journalists, leaving a lasting imprint on Hindi journalism in Central India.
Courage During the Emergency
During the Emergency (1975–77), Manikchandra Vajpayee stood firm in defense of democratic values. He was imprisoned for 20 months, exemplifying courage, conviction, and commitment to freedom of expression and civil liberties.

An eloquent writer and profound thinker, his articles and editorials continue to remain relevant. He documented significant historical and social events with clarity and depth through several important books, including:
