Industrialist, Educationist and Freedom Supporter
Shri Manoharbhai Patel was a self-made industrialist, philanthropist, and committed public servant whose life journey reflects determination, social responsibility, and nation-building spirit.
Born on 9 February 1906 in Nadiad, Gujarat, into a poor farmer’s family, he could not continue his education beyond Standard IV due to financial constraints. At the age of 15, he moved to Jabalpur in search of livelihood and began working in a bidi factory, loading and unloading tobacco bags.
Rise as a Leading Industrialist
In 1930, he relocated to Gondia (then part of the Central Provinces and Berar) to work in his uncle’s firm, M/s C.J. Patel & Company, which traded tobacco with bidi manufacturers. Recognizing his dedication and business acumen, his uncle made him a partner.
Soon, Manoharbhai Patel entered bidi manufacturing himself, creating employment opportunities for thousands. By the 1940s, his company had grown into a major bidi manufacturing enterprise with units in:
- West Bengal
- Bihar
- Andhra Pradesh
- Orissa
- Madhya Pradesh
His business empire employed over 60,000 workers, making him one of the prominent industrialists of his time.
Transforming Education in Gondia and Beyond
Despite lacking formal education, Manoharbhai Patel deeply valued learning. Determined to give back to society, he founded the Gondia Education Society. In a remarkable initiative, he established 22 High Schools and a Degree College in a single day in a district that previously had no High School.
Today, the Gondia Education Society runs around:
- 30 Colleges
- 30 High Schools
- Educating over 80,000 students
These institutions offer courses in Engineering, Information Technology, Computers, Architecture, Management, Law, Pharmacy, and other disciplines.
He also founded the Nadiad Education Society in Gujarat, which continues to provide higher education in Engineering, Management, Science, and Arts. Additionally, he established hospitals and charitable institutions across the country.
Role in Freedom Movement and Public Life
During India’s struggle for independence, Manoharbhai Patel came into contact with prominent leaders such as:
- Mahatma Gandhi
- Jawaharlal Nehru
- Vallabhbhai Patel
- Jayaprakash Narayan
A true Gandhian at heart, he always wore khadi and remained an active member of the Congress Party. He served as:
- Member of the All India Congress Committee
- President of the Vidarbha Region Congress Committee
- Treasurer of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee
In 1946, he became President of the Gondia Municipal Council and held the position until his demise in 1970. He was also elected to the first Legislative Assembly in 1952 (C.P. and Berar) and later served in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after state reorganization in 1960.
Recognition and Lasting Legacy
In tribute to his developmental contributions, the Government of Maharashtra named a major irrigation project in Vidarbha as Manohar Sagar.
Upon his passing on 17 August 1970, he was accorded a State Funeral. The then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri V.P. Naik, praised him as a successful industrialist whose contributions to the freedom movement, agriculture, education, employment, and upliftment of the downtrodden would always be remembered.
