100 Years of Healthcare Excellence
Foundation and Vision
Christian Medical College and Hospital Vellore was founded in 1900 by Ida Scudder. Her inspiration came from witnessing the lack of proper medical care for women during childbirth in India. Determined to make a difference, she studied medicine at Cornell University and returned to Vellore to establish a small clinic, which later grew into a globally respected medical institution.
Growth into a Premier Institution
Over the decades, CMC Vellore has evolved into a multidisciplinary centre for healthcare, education, and research. It has trained more than ten thousand healthcare professionals and offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, and allied health sciences. The institution is known for its commitment to ethical, high-quality, and non-commercial medical education.
Pioneering Community Healthcare
Community service has always been central to CMC’s mission. Ida Scudder’s innovative “roadside clinics,” where medical teams traveled to rural areas, laid the foundation for the Community Health and Development (CHAD) programme. This initiative has been recognized by the World Health Organization as one of the best primary healthcare models in India. Units like RUHSA and CONCH further strengthen outreach efforts in rural and underserved regions.
Medical Innovations and Achievements
CMC Vellore has achieved several historic milestones in Indian healthcare:
- First leprosy reconstructive surgery in the world (1948)
- First open-heart surgery in India (1961)
- First rehabilitation institute in India (1966)
- First bone marrow transplant in India (1986)
The hospital provides advanced tertiary care, including neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, organ transplantation, and oncology, while focusing on cost-effective and ethical treatment methods.
Research and Public Health Contributions
The institution has made significant contributions to research in infectious diseases such as leprosy, polio, HIV/AIDS, and malnutrition. Its work has been supported by leading organizations like WHO, ICMR, and other national and international bodies.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To mark its centenary (1900–2000), the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp honoring CMC Vellore. The stamp features the college chapel, symbolizing the institution’s ethos of service and compassion, while the First Day Cover portrays Dr. Ida Scudder, whose vision continues to inspire generations.
Legacy and Impact
CMC Vellore stands as a symbol of excellence in healthcare, education, and research. Its unwavering commitment to serving the underprivileged, maintaining high ethical standards, and advancing medical science has made it one of India’s most respected medical institutions.
