Celebrating 100 Years of Mysore Medical College & Research Institute
Mysore Medical College, the first and oldest medical college in Karnataka, has completed a glorious journey of 100 years. Established in July 1924 by the visionary King of Mysore, Sri Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar, the college laid the foundation for modern medical education in the state. What began with just 30 students and two departments—Physiology and Anatomy—has now grown into a premier medical institute that continues to shape healthcare in Karnataka and beyond.
A Legacy of Excellence
The early students of Mysore Medical College received their clinical training at Krishna Rajendra Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital, institutions that remain integral to the college even today. Under the leadership of Dr. J. F. Robinson, its first Principal, the college quickly established a reputation for high standards of medical education. This legacy inspired the establishment of several other medical colleges across the state, making Karnataka the Medical Education Hub of India.
Over the decades, the college marked several milestones:
- Silver Jubilee (1949): Inaugurated by His Royal Highness Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar.
- Golden Jubilee (1974): Celebrated under Sri Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar.
- Platinum Jubilee (1999): Marked by the construction of a modern indoor auditorium.
- Centenary (2024): A celebration of 100 years of service, education, and research.
Growth and Contribution
Today, the Mysore Medical College & Research Institute offers 150 MBBS seats, 153 postgraduate seats, super-specialty programs, nursing, paramedical, and allied health science courses. Its hospitals, including K.R. Hospital, Cheluvamba Hospital, PKTB & CD Hospital, P.K. Trauma Care Centre, and the P.K. Super Speciality Hospital, collectively provide:
- 2,315 hospital beds.
- 2,600+ daily outpatients.
- 13,500 surgeries annually.
- 10,000 childbirths annually.
- Nearly 9 lakh outpatients and 4.5 lakh inpatients treated every year.
Equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities in Radiology, Pathology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry, the institute performs thousands of laboratory tests, X-rays, scans, and emergency procedures round the clock. It has also played a crucial role in handling health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, with advanced infrastructure such as high-capacity oxygen plants and a Genomic Sequencing Laboratory.
Alumni and Impact
Over 25,000 doctors trained at this institution now serve across Karnataka, India, and the world, carrying forward the college’s legacy of commitment, compassion, and excellence.
Honoured with a Commemorative Stamp
To mark its centenary, the Department of Posts has released a Mysore Medical College stamp, celebrating 100 years of academic brilliance, pioneering research, and unparalleled public healthcare service. This commemorative stamp is not just a tribute to the institution but also to the generations of doctors who have dedicated their lives to the well-being of society.
