Legendary Actor and Visionary Leader

N. T. Rama Rao (1923–1996), affectionately known as “Anna” (brother) among the people of Andhra Pradesh, remains one of the most iconic personalities in Indian cinema and politics. Popularly called NTR, he earned the title “Viswa Vikhyata Nata Sarvabhowma” for his unmatched contribution to acting and public life.

Early Life and Background

Born on May 28, 1923, in Nimmakuru village of Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, NTR came from a humble agricultural family. His parents, Lakshmaiah and Venkata Ramamma, instilled in him strong values and a deep concern for the welfare of the poor and underprivileged.

Rise in Cinema and Acting Career

NTR developed an interest in theatre during his college days. After completing his graduation in Arts, he briefly worked in government service before resigning to pursue a full-time career in films.

He went on to act in over 320 films, becoming one of the greatest actors in Indian cinema. His portrayal of mythological characters such as Lord Rama and Lord Krishna left a lasting impression on audiences, with many admiring and even revering him as a divine figure.

A disciplined individual, NTR followed a strict routine, practiced yoga, and maintained a teetotal lifestyle. Despite his busy acting career, he actively participated in social service, including fundraising efforts to support famine victims in Rayalaseema and those affected by the Diviseema disaster.

Entry into Politics and Formation of Telugu Desam Party

In March 1982, NTR transitioned from cinema to politics and founded the Telugu Desam Party. His vision was to promote Telugu pride, cultural identity, and economic development in Andhra Pradesh.

The party achieved a historic victory in the very next elections, and NTR was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in January 1983.

Key Reforms and Welfare Schemes

As Chief Minister, N. T. Rama Rao worked tirelessly—often up to 16 hours a day—for the welfare of the people. His government introduced several impactful schemes, including:

  • Subsidized rice at ₹2 per kg
  • Housing for economically weaker sections
  • The Telugu Ganga Project for irrigation
  • Job reservations for women in select sectors
  • Pensions for destitute widows
  • Administrative reforms at the district level
  • Equal property rights for women

These initiatives significantly improved the socio-economic conditions of many citizens.

Symbolism of “Anna” and Stamp Design

The name “Anna,” meaning “brother,” symbolizes a blend of care and strength—representing both maternal love and paternal support. This symbolism is reflected in the commemorative stamp design, where the sun represents the father and the earth represents the mother.

The stamp also incorporates elements that highlight NTR’s life, achievements, and his connection with the masses.

Legacy and Recognition

N. T. Rama Rao passed away on January 18, 1996, in Hyderabad, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a cultural icon and transformative leader.

In recognition of his immense contributions to cinema and public service, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honor, celebrating his life as a true leader of the people.
