Introduction
The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) is the united expression of Protestant and Orthodox churches across the country. It serves as a common platform for shared thought, action and witness, fostering cooperation among churches and related Christian organizations in matters concerning faith, service and social responsibility.
Historical Background
The organization began its journey in 1914 as the National Missionary Council, dedicated to the spiritual and social service of the Church and the nation. As the need for a unified Indian identity grew, the organization was restructured in 1923 and became the National Christian Council.
In 1979, it assumed its present form as the National Council of Churches in India, reflecting a renewed commitment towards unity, national service and social justice.
Commitment to Social Transformation
Over the decades, the NCCI has actively addressed issues concerning liberation from social, economic and political oppression, promoting justice, dignity and equality. It continues to serve as a leading voice in advocating for the marginalized and vulnerable communities across India.
Structure and Commissions
Headquartered in Nagpur, the NCCI functions as a facilitator of inter-church unity and collaborative service. It operates through several specialized Commissions, including:
- Commission on Justice, Peace & Creation
- Commission on Dalits
- Commission on Tribals & Adivasis
- Commission on Policy, Governance & Public Witness
- Commission on Youth
- Commission on Communication and Relations
In addition, the Council oversees three autonomous bodies involved in:
- Empowerment and development of women
- Promotion of interfaith harmony and peace
- Addressing urban–rural concerns, especially through the Vidarbha Centre for Labour Concerns (VCLC)
Membership and Contributions
The NCCI has 30 National Churches as members. These Churches contribute significantly to nation-building through:
- Hundreds of schools, colleges and educational institutions
- Renowned medical institutions, such as Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore and Ludhiana
- Numerous social service organizations, including orphanages, homes for the elderly, night shelters, centres for the physically and mentally challenged, and rescue homes
Important Christian bodies such as the Bible Society of India (BSI), the Board of Theological Education of the Senate of Serampore College, the National Council of YMCAs, and the YWCA of India are also integral members of NCCI.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
A commemorative postage stamp was issued to honour the National Council of Churches in India, celebrating its century-long legacy of service, unity and social commitment.
