Golden Jubilee Commemorative Postage Stamp
The National Defence Academy (NDA), located in Khadakwasla near Pune, is one of the world’s first institutions to provide combined training to officer cadets of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Known as the “Cradle of Leadership,” the NDA has played a vital role in shaping generations of military leaders in India.
Origin and Establishment of NDA
The concept of the NDA dates back to the pre-independence era, when a committee was formed to design a system for joint training of the armed forces. After extensive planning, the site near Khadakwasla Lake—previously home to a World War II Combined Warfare School—was selected for the academy.
In 1946, the Indian Military Academy was reorganized into the Armed Forces Academy with two wings: the Inter Services Wing and the Military Wing. The first batch of 190 cadets from all three services began their combined training on 16 January 1949 at Dehradun.
The foundation stone of the new academy at Khadakwasla was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru on 6 October 1949. Soon after, the Joint Services Wing was shifted to Khadakwasla and formally became the National Defence Academy.
Excellence in Training and Leadership
Over the decades, the National Defence Academy has established itself as a premier institution for military training. It provides a unique environment where cadets undergo rigorous academic and physical training while fostering inter-service camaraderie.
By its Golden Jubilee in January 1999, the NDA had trained nearly 25,000 alumni, many of whom have served not only in the Indian Armed Forces but also in the forces of friendly nations.
Distinguished Achievements
The NDA boasts an illustrious legacy:
- Numerous alumni have been recipients of India’s highest gallantry awards
- Many have rendered distinguished service in both war and peace
- At least ten alumni have risen to become Chiefs of their respective Armed Forces
These achievements highlight the academy’s contribution to national security and leadership development.
The “Cradle of Leadership”
As India moved toward the new millennium, the National Defence Academy continued its mission of nation-building by training the finest young minds of the country. Its motto, “Seva Parmo Dharma” (Service Before Self), reflects the core values instilled in every cadet.
Commemorative Stamp Recognition
To mark 50 years of excellence, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp titled:
“Golden Jubilee of the National Defence Academy (NDA)”
This stamp honours the NDA’s enduring legacy in producing disciplined, courageous, and dedicated leaders for the armed forces.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
The National Defence Academy remains a symbol of excellence in military training and leadership. Its contribution to the nation continues to inspire generations of young Indians to serve with honour, dedication, and courage.
The Golden Jubilee commemorative stamp stands as a tribute to this prestigious institution and its pivotal role in safeguarding the nation.
