The Grey Granite Central Sculpture stands at the heart of the National Police Memorial (NPM), Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, as a powerful and solemn tribute to police martyrs who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Designed by the National Gallery of Modern Arts, the sculpture represents the enduring spirit, resilience, and supreme sacrifice of India’s police forces.

Architectural Design and Material

Rising to a height of 30 feet, the Central Sculpture is carved from a single monolithic block of granite, showcasing both polished and unpolished surfaces. The use of grey and ebony-toned granite reflects permanence, strength, and dignity—qualities synonymous with police service. The contrast in textures symbolizes the hardships and sacrifices faced by police personnel while steadfastly serving the nation.

Jeeva Jyot – The Eternal Flame

The Central Sculpture is known as “Jeeva Jyot”, envisioned as an eternal flame. It serves as a sacred space, signifying that a police officer is always on duty—whether in life or in sacrifice. The flame-like vertical form ensures that the memory of police martyrs remains alive in the collective national consciousness.

Spiritual and Symbolic Significance

The granite pillar embodies tolerance, karmic symbolism, and timelessness, reinforcing the idea that the sacrifices made by police personnel transcend time. It stands as a silent sentinel, reminding visitors of the courage and commitment required to uphold law, order, and national security.

Central Place in the Memorial Complex

Positioned prominently within the National Police Memorial complex, the Grey Granite Central Sculpture forms the focal point around which other elements—such as the Wall of Valour, landscaped ramparts, and museum—are organized. Together, these elements create a sacred and contemplative space dedicated to honouring police martyrs.

Commemorative Recognition

To commemorate the significance of the National Police Memorial and its iconic Central Sculpture, the Department of Posts has issued a Commemorative Postage Stamp. This stamp honour the supreme sacrifice of police personnel and help preserve the legacy symbolized by the Grey Granite Central Sculpture.
