Genesis and Evolution

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBPF) was raised on 24th October, 1962, in the wake of the Chinese conflict, under the CRPF Act. In 1992, Parliament enacted the ITBP Act, giving the Force a distinct legal framework. Reflecting its progressive outlook, ITBPF raised its first Mahila Battalion in January 2010.

Role and Responsibilities

ITBPF is a versatile force, capable of operating in diverse terrain and under some of the most challenging climatic conditions. From an initial strength of four battalions, it has grown to 45 Service Battalions and 4 Specialist Battalions. The Force is entrusted with guarding the 3,488 km long India–China border, stretching from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh.

In addition to border guarding, ITBPF provides security to VVIPs/VIPs, protects vital installations, and ensures security for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims. It has played a crucial role in combating militancy in Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and the North-East, and is presently deployed in Chhattisgarh for anti-Naxal operations.

International Peacekeeping and Internal Security

ITBPF has made significant contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions in countries such as Angola, Namibia, Bosnia and Kosovo. Currently, a Formed Police Unit (FPU) with 125 personnel is deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo under the UN. Elite ITBPF Commandos have also been providing security to the Indian Embassy and Consulates in Afghanistan.

In recognition of its vital contribution, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has designated ITBPF as the nodal agency for coordinating United Nations Selection Assistance Team (UNSAT) tests and for conducting pre-induction training of Indian police officers for UN missions. Domestically, ITBPF has provided internal security during major events such as the Commonwealth Games, 2010.

Disaster Management and First Responder Role

ITBPF has been designated as the First Responder in the Himalayan region for Disaster Management Operations. The Force has successfully carried out major relief and rescue operations during earthquakes, landslides and floods, demonstrating its capability and commitment to humanitarian assistance.

Modern Technology and Infrastructure

To meet operational challenges, ITBPF employs state-of-the-art technology, including modern weaponry, advanced communication systems, surveillance equipment, electronic gadgets and weapon simulators. High-powered vehicles like the Stallion and LPTA, suited for high-altitude operations, are an integral part of its logistics. Emphasis has also been placed on computerization and e-governance, with personnel information kiosks established for jawans to access service-related details.

Training and Centres of Excellence

ITBPF is renowned for its excellence in training. The ITBP Mountaineering and Skiing Institute at Auli is a premier institute for winter warfare, ice craft and Antarctic expeditions. The ITBP Academy at Mussoorie has been declared a Centre of Excellence, and the Force has also established a Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School in Uttarakhand.

Mountaineering, Sports and Achievements

A mountain-oriented force, ITBPF personnel are skilled mountaineers, skiers and rafters. They have scaled almost all major Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, and rafted down India’s mighty rivers. The Force has also excelled in sports; notably, Ms Kalpana Devi of ITBPF became the first Indian woman judoka to win a bronze medal in the World Cup. ITBPF personnel have received numerous awards and medals for distinguished and meritorious service.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

In recognition of the dedication, courage and multifaceted service of the Force, the Department of Posts salutes the personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force by issuing a Commemorative Postage Stamp on ITBPF, honouring its vital role in safeguarding the nation and serving humanity.
