Department of Psychiatry and AIIMH – Foundations of NIMHANS

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, is today recognized globally as a leader in mental health and neurosciences. Yet, its roots can be traced to two pivotal institutions—the Mysore State Mental Hospital and the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH)—whose vision and dedication laid the foundation for NIMHANS’ extraordinary journey.

Department of Psychiatry – A Legacy of Care and Research

The Department of Psychiatry has been central to NIMHANS’ growth and reputation. Its origins go back to the Mysore State Mental Hospital (1925), one of the earliest purpose-built mental health institutions in India. Over the decades, the Department expanded beyond custodial care, pioneering a shift towards evidence-based, patient-centric psychiatry.

From the outset, it fostered a culture of research and innovation, focusing on mental health challenges deeply relevant to India—addiction, psychosis, child and adolescent psychiatry, and community mental health. The Department has also been at the forefront of developing models of psychiatric care that address stigma, promote rehabilitation, and integrate mental health into primary healthcare systems.

Today, the Department of Psychiatry is not only a hub for advanced clinical care but also a premier centre for training mental health professionals, attracting students and researchers from across the globe.

The Merger – Birth of NIMHANS

In 1974, the merger of the Mysore State Mental Hospital with AIIMH created a new institution—NIMHANS. This integration brought psychiatry and neurosciences together under one roof, a model that remains unique even today. The vision and strength of the Department of Psychiatry and the pioneering role of AIIMH continue to guide NIMHANS’ mission of advancing mental health care, research, and policy.

A Philatelic Tribute

Marking 50 years of NIMHANS, the Department of Posts has issued a commemorative postage stamp. This stamp celebrates not only the achievements of NIMHANS but also the historic contributions of the Department of Psychiatry and AIIMH, whose vision and dedication transformed mental health care in India.

Through this philatelic tribute, India Post honours their legacy—a legacy of healing, innovation, and service to humanity.
