The International Criminal Police Organisation (ICPO), known as INTERPOL, traces its roots back to the International Criminal Police Commission, established in 1923 in Vienna, Austria. Its primary objectives include facilitating mutual assistance among criminal police authorities across different countries within the boundaries of existing laws and enhancing institutions for the prevention and suppression of ordinary law crimes. INTERPOL strictly prohibits involvement in activities of a political, military, racial, or religious nature.
With a membership spanning 114 countries across all six continents, INTERPOL operates from its headquarters in Paris, overseen by the Secretary General, who acts as the chief executive. The organization comprises the General Assembly, the Executive Committee, and the National Central Bureaus of member countries. India has been a member since 1938, represented by the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The General Assembly convenes annually to discuss various international policing issues. The upcoming 42nd session, scheduled for October 2nd to 9th, 1973, in Vienna, Austria, is particularly significant as it marks INTERPOL’s 50th anniversary. Topics of discussion include theft of cultural property, unlawful interference with international civil aviation, drug trafficking, currency counterfeiting, human trafficking, and more.
INTERPOL publishes several materials on police matters, including the monthly magazine “International Police Review,” international crime statistics, reports on international drug trafficking cases, and counterfeit and forgery reports.
In commemorating INTERPOL’s 50 years of service in combating international crimes and fostering global cooperation, the Indian P & T Department is honored to issue a commemorative stamp featuring the organization’s emblem. The First Day Cover showcases INTERPOL’s new headquarters in Paris.
