Field Hockey is one of the most exciting and historically significant events in the Olympic Games. The sport demands speed, coordination, teamwork, and exceptional skill, reflecting the Olympic ideals of excellence and fair competition.
The Olympic Games, regarded as the greatest sporting spectacle in the world, bring together athletes from different continents to compete in a spirit that transcends boundaries of race, culture, and ideology. Guided by the motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius”—faster, higher, stronger—the Games celebrate the highest achievements in athletic performance.
India has a remarkable legacy in Olympic hockey. Since beginning regular participation in the Games in 1920, India has achieved extraordinary success in this sport. The country won six consecutive Olympic gold medals in hockey from 1928 to 1956, establishing a golden era in the history of the game. India later added more Olympic gold medals at the 1964 Summer Olympics and the 1980 Summer Olympics, reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s strongest hockey nations.
The 2004 Summer Olympics, held in Athens from 13 to 29 August 2004, once again brought together athletes from around the world to compete in numerous sports, including hockey. India participated in several disciplines, continuing its long association with the Olympic movement.
Philatelic Tribute
To honour the Olympic spirit and highlight India’s sporting heritage, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp featuring hockey as part of a set of four stamps released to mark the 28th Olympic Games. The stamp celebrates hockey as a sport that has brought immense pride and glory to India and symbolizes the nation’s enduring pursuit of excellence in international sports.
