Shooting is one of the most challenging and technically demanding events in the Olympic Games. The sport requires exceptional concentration, precision, and mental control, as athletes must aim accurately at targets from specific distances using rifles, pistols, or shotguns.
The Olympic Games, known as the greatest sporting spectacle in the world, bring together athletes from all continents to compete in a spirit of excellence and sportsmanship. Guided by the Olympic motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius”—meaning faster, higher, stronger—the Games celebrate the highest achievements in human endurance, skill, and discipline.
The tradition of the Olympics dates back to 776 BC, when the first Games were held at Olympia in Greece. Revived in modern times through the efforts of Pierre de Coubertin, the modern Olympic movement began with the first Games in Athens in 1896 under the guidance of the International Olympic Committee.
India has been associated with the Olympic movement for more than a century and has regularly participated in the Games since 1920. Indian athletes have competed in several sporting disciplines, including shooting, demonstrating dedication and skill on the international stage.
The 2004 Summer Olympics, held in Athens from 13 to 29 August 2004, brought together athletes from around the world to compete in numerous sports, including shooting. India participated in several events, continuing its tradition of striving for excellence in international sports.
Philatelic Tribute
To commemorate the Olympic spirit and India’s participation in the Games, India Post issued a set of four commemorative postage stamps marking the 28th Olympic Games. One of these stamps features shooting, highlighting the discipline, precision, and determination required in this sport while celebrating the enduring values of the Olympic movement.
