Wrestling is one of the oldest and most respected sports in the Olympic Games, reflecting the ideals of strength, endurance, and skill that define the Olympic spirit. The sport has deep roots in ancient civilizations and was an important event in the ancient Olympic Games, which began in 776 BC at Olympia in Greece. Wrestling was also a key component of the pentathlon, demonstrating the physical prowess and discipline of athletes.
In modern times, wrestling continues to be a major Olympic discipline, demanding exceptional technique, agility, and strength. The sport perfectly embodies the Olympic motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius”—faster, higher, stronger—as athletes push the limits of their physical and mental abilities in pursuit of victory.
India has a long and proud tradition of wrestling. The sport has been practiced for centuries in traditional Indian akhadas, where wrestlers train rigorously to develop strength, stamina, and discipline. This rich heritage has contributed significantly to India’s sporting culture and has produced many accomplished wrestlers who have represented the country on the international stage.
The 2004 Summer Olympics, held in Athens from 13 to 29 August 2004, brought together athletes from around the world to compete in various sporting disciplines, including wrestling. India participated in several events, continuing its long association with the Olympic movement.
Philatelic Tribute
To celebrate the Olympic spirit and encourage sporting excellence, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp featuring wrestling as part of a set of four stamps released to mark the 28th Olympic Games. The stamp highlights the importance of wrestling as a traditional and globally respected sport, symbolizing strength, determination, and the enduring Olympic ideals.
