Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is one of India’s leading national oil companies. It is mainly engaged in the exploration, development, and production of crude oil and natural gas, along with value-added petroleum products such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Naphtha. The corporation plays a vital role in strengthening India’s energy security and supporting industrial growth.

Early Oil Exploration in India

During the pre-independence period, oil production in India was limited. Only two companies were involved in oil production:

  • Assam Oil Company operating in the north-eastern region, and
  • Attock Oil Company working in the north-western part of undivided India.

Exploration activities were minimal, and much of India’s sedimentary basins were believed to have little potential for oil and gas resources.

Formation and Development

After India gained independence in 1947, the Government realised the strategic and economic importance of petroleum resources for industrial development and national defence. As a result:

  • In 1955, the Government established the Oil and Natural Gas Directorate to explore oil and gas resources across the country.
  • In August 1956, this directorate was upgraded to a Commission, marking the birth of ONGC.
  • In October 1959, ONGC became a statutory body with expanded powers.
  • Later, under India’s liberalised economic policy, ONGC was converted into a public limited company in June 1993 and officially recognised under the Companies Act, 1956 in February 1994.

Management Structure

ONGC is governed by a Board of Directors responsible for setting goals, strategies, and policies. The board includes 16 members, among them 7 Executive Directors, including the Chairman and Managing Director.

Achievements and Contributions

Since its establishment, ONGC has played a crucial role in transforming India’s upstream oil sector. Its major achievements include:

  • Discovering 5 out of India’s 6 major hydrocarbon basins
  • Making over 310 hydrocarbon discoveries within the country
  • Discovering nearly 6 billion tonnes of in-place oil and gas reserves
  • Contributing about 84% of India’s domestic oil and gas production

ONGC has also been highly successful in exploration licensing rounds, winning 59 out of 110 exploration blocks offered under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP).

Global Recognition

ONGC has earned international recognition for its performance and scale of operations:

  • Ranked 24th among global energy companies by market capitalisation in the PFC Energy 50 list
  • Placed among the top Indian corporations in the Forbes Global 2000 list
  • Featured in the Fortune Global 500 companies by turnover

International Operations

ONGC’s international arm, ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL), is India’s largest multinational oil company. It operates 18 oil and gas properties across 14 countries, expanding India’s presence in the global energy sector.

Research and Development

The corporation has institutionalised research and development in exploration and production (E&P). It has established seven specialised research institutions focusing on key areas such as:

  • Exploration
  • Drilling technology
  • Reservoir management
  • Production technology
  • Ocean engineering

ONGC is also committed to maintaining high standards of occupational health, safety, and environmental protection, supported by well-equipped crisis management teams.
