Cypripedium himalaicum Rolfe, commonly known as The Himalayan Cypripedium, is one of the rarest and most exquisite orchid species found in India. Renowned for its unique slipper-shaped bloom, this species holds a special place among orchid lovers and botanists for its rarity, elegance, and ecological importance.
This orchid grows naturally in the alpine and sub-alpine regions of the Himalayas, flourishing in cool climates, moist meadows, and forest margins at high altitudes. It is typically found in very small, fragmented populations, often limited to a few scattered colonies. The plant’s habitat is extremely fragile, and its survival depends on a delicate balance of environmental factors, including suitable pollinators and specific soil conditions enriched by mycorrhiza.
The Himalayan Cypripedium is highly vulnerable to environmental threats, such as overgrazing, habitat loss due to deforestation and trampling, and illegal collection for trade. Climate change has further endangered its existence, causing a steady decline in its natural populations. For these reasons, it has been assessed as ‘Endangered (EN)’ under the IUCN Red List criteria.
The species is admired worldwide for its striking and unusual flower, which resembles a delicate slipper or pouch—an iconic feature of the Cypripedium genus. Its rarity, coupled with its captivating charm, makes it one of the most sought-after orchids among conservationists and researchers.
