Paphiopedilum villosum (Lindl.) Stein, popularly known as the Villose Paphiopedilum, is a highly prized orchid species recognised for its distinctive beauty and rarity. This exquisite orchid has gained international attention due to its unique floral structure, which resembles a slipper-shaped pouch—typical of the Paphiopedilum genus—making it extremely attractive to collectors and orchid enthusiasts worldwide.
In recent years, the natural population of Paphiopedilum villosum has undergone a significant decline, largely due to indiscriminate collection and overexploitation for the international ornamental plant trade. Its appealing form, long-lasting flowers, and high commercial demand have unfortunately made it vulnerable in the wild.
Acknowledging the threats to its existence, the species has been classified as ‘Vulnerable (VU)’ under the IUCN Red List criteria, highlighting the urgent need for protection and conservation measures. Furthermore, it has been listed under Appendix-I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), which places strict restrictions on its trade, helping safeguard the species from further depletion.
