Early Life
Pannalal Barupal was born on 6 April 1913 in Bikaner, in the state of Rajasthan. He received his early education at Ramdev Pathshala in Bikaner. From a young age, he was deeply influenced by nationalist ideas and became actively involved in India’s freedom struggle.
Role in the Freedom Movement
Barupal actively participated in major movements against British rule, including:
- Non-Cooperation Movement
- Quit India Movement
Through these movements, he worked with dedication to achieve India’s independence.
Political Career
A popular leader among the people, Pannalal Barupal served as a Member of the Lok Sabha for 25 years (1952–1977). During his long parliamentary career, he consistently raised issues concerning:
- Farmers
- Workers and labourers
- Economically weaker sections of society
He also served as the Chief Examiner of the Rules and Resolutions in the Lok Sabha Secretariat, contributing to parliamentary procedures and governance.
Social Reform Activities
Apart from politics, Barupal was deeply committed to social reform. He worked actively against the Jagirdari system, which was a feudal landholding practice prevalent in many regions.
He also took initiatives to promote social equality, including efforts to allow Dalits entry into temples. His life was guided by ideals such as:

He was also associated with the Bikaner Rajya Praja Parishad, which worked for democratic reforms and public welfare.

Pannalal Barupal passed away on 18 May 1983. His life remains an example of dedicated public service, social reform, and commitment to equality.
To honour his contributions to India’s freedom struggle and social progress, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in his memory.
