Introduction
The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry is one of the leading industry associations in India, particularly representing the interests of trade and industry in North India. Established in 1905, the Chamber has played a significant role in promoting economic development and strengthening business activities across several states for more than a century.
Establishment and Early History
The Chamber was originally founded in 1905 as the Punjab Chamber of Commerce. After India gained independence and following the partition of the country, Delhi emerged as a major commercial center with a large population. As a result, in 1952 the organization was renamed the Punjab and Delhi Chamber of Commerce.
With the increasing importance of manufacturing and industrial activities among its members, the word “Industry” was added to its name in 1964 to reflect its expanding scope. Later, in 1981, the organization adopted its present name — the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The acronym PHD represents Progress, Harmony, and Development.
Regional Presence
The Chamber actively serves trade and industry across ten states and union territories of North India, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, and Uttarakhand.
Membership and Activities
The Chamber has a membership of more than 1500 corporate entities engaged in a wide range of industries and services. These include sectors such as chemicals, engineering, textiles, food processing, automobile components, consumer goods, financial services, and management consultancy.
In addition to direct membership, the Chamber serves more than 112 association members representing nearly 35,000 commercial and industrial organizations. Through this extensive network, the Chamber provides a common platform where representatives of business and industry can interact with government authorities and contribute valuable suggestions for policy formulation.
Organizational Structure
The activities of the Chamber are managed by a Managing Committee composed of prominent industrialists from the region. Its work is supported by various expert committees and task forces consisting of nominees from member companies who contribute their knowledge and experience to address industry-related issues.
The Chamber’s headquarters is located in New Delhi, and it also maintains regional offices in Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jaipur, Shimla, and Bhopal.
Services and International Cooperation
The Secretariat of the Chamber provides services through specialized divisions such as Northern Regional Development, Infrastructure, Economic Affairs, International Affairs, Corporate Affairs and Taxation, and Financial Services.
To promote global trade and cooperation, the Chamber has also signed Memorandums of Understanding with several international chambers of commerce and organizations. These agreements help create opportunities for information exchange, business collaboration, and technical and economic cooperation.
Social and Developmental Initiatives
Over the years, the Chamber has expanded its activities beyond trade and industry to include several social development initiatives. These programmes focus on improving the quality of life through activities such as family welfare, social forestry, education and training, and promotion of self-employment opportunities.
The Chamber’s motto, “In community’s life and part of it,” reflects its commitment to economic growth while simultaneously contributing to social welfare and national development.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To mark the centenary of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and recognize its long-standing contribution to trade, industry, and economic development in India, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in its honour.
