The origins of Cooch Behar HPO date back to 1875, when the Post & Telegraph Office of Cooch Behar State was introduced under the administrative control of the Rangpur Postal Division. Initially, the Cooch Behar Post Office operated from a building located in Purana Post Office Para.
The present Head Post Office building, covering an area of 8,893 sq. ft., was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Nriprendra Narayan. Under his rule, the postal network in Cooch Behar State expanded significantly, comprising one telegraph office and five post offices.
Following administrative reorganization, the Rangpur Division was bifurcated to form the Jalpaiguri Division. Subsequently, the Cooch Behar Division was carved out of Jalpaiguri Division on 16 April 1979, strengthening postal administration in the region.
Cooch Behar HPO stands today as a symbol of the region’s postal heritage and administrative evolution, reflecting the growth of communication services in eastern India.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
As part of the celebrations leading up to INDIPEX-2011 – World Philatelic Exhibition, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp on Postal Heritage Buildings, honoring the historical significance of Cooch Behar HPO.
