Delhi GPO is among the select buildings of India Post that have been accorded the prestigious status of “Heritage Building” by the Archaeological Survey of India. Situated in close proximity to the historic Red Fort and the vibrant market of Chandni Chowk, the structure holds immense historical and architectural significance.
The post office was originally opened in 1855 and was granted permanent status in 1865. The land for the present building was purchased in 1870, and the GPO began functioning from its current premises in 1885. Spanning a floor area of 45,457 square feet, the building is regarded as a representative example of British-period architecture in India.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
Celebrating this proud legacy, India Post issued commemorative postage stamp on Postal Heritage Buildings during INDIPEX 2011 – World Philatelic Exhibition, honoring landmarks like Delhi GPO that symbolize the nation’s rich postal heritage.
