Lucknow GPO stands as a fine example of relatively modern engineering blended with elegant architectural design. Constructed using red bricks and limestone—without the use of iron—the building reflects the craftsmanship and structural innovation of its time.
Measuring 86.5 meters in length and 36 meters in width, the structure commands attention with its grand proportions. One of its most striking features is the 30-meter-high clock tower, adorned with clocks on all four sides, which lends the building a majestic and commanding presence in the city skyline.
The ground floor showcases a sequence of pillars and arches, creating a rhythmic architectural pattern. The pillars are intricately carved, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the façade. The first floor houses 25 rooms, indicating the building’s extensive administrative capacity.
A stone inscription embedded at the main gate records the construction period as 1929–1932, marking an important chapter in the evolution of postal infrastructure in India. Today, Lucknow GPO remains an iconic landmark, reflecting both architectural excellence and the enduring legacy of India’s postal heritage.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
