Purshottamdas H. Purohit – A Life of Service, Sacrifice, and Vision
The story of India’s freedom and nation-building is not only about the well-known leaders but also about the countless unsung heroes who worked quietly, with dedication and courage, for the larger good of society. Among them was Purshottamdas H. Purohit—a karmayogi, freedom fighter, visionary entrepreneur, and philanthropist—who devoted his entire life to hard work, selfless service, and the upliftment of people from all walks of life.
Early Life and Struggles
Purshottamdas H. Purohit was born on August 2, 1920, in Basant, Pali, Rajasthan, into a Rajpurohit (Brahmin) family. His childhood was marked by hardship; losing his father at the age of three, he was raised single-handedly by his mother. With scarce resources to sustain farming, young Purshottamdas left for Mumbai at the tender age of ten to earn a livelihood. Life in the bustling metropolis was not easy, but his determination and work ethic helped him carve out a path forward. Through sheer perseverance, he became recognized as a skilled and respected chef.
A Journey Abroad and a Meeting with Destiny
His exceptional culinary talent soon brought him opportunities beyond India. In 1939, he was selected to accompany his employers as head chef on a business tour to Europe. What was meant to be a short assignment extended into a four-year stay due to the outbreak of World War II. Traveling across Italy, England, France, Austria, and Germany, he gained invaluable exposure to diverse cultures and ideas. Yet, he remained firmly grounded in his Indian identity and values.
It was during this period that he encountered his hero—Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Deeply inspired, he became actively associated with the Azad Hind movement, pledging his efforts to India’s struggle for freedom. His role, though discreet, was vital, and he emerged as a trusted confidant of Netaji. For Purshottamdas Purohit, participation in the movement was not an act of recognition-seeking but a duty to the nation. The saga of India’s independence is built on the dedication of such silent warriors whose sacrifices often went unnoticed.
Building a Legacy in Independent India
After independence, Purshottamdas Purohit returned to Mumbai and ventured into entrepreneurship. He started with a modest lodging and boarding house, which over time grew into the renowned Adarsh Group of Hotels—including Adarsh Lodge, Adarsh Hotel, Adarsh Palace, Adarsh Mahal, and Adarsh Baug. His vision was not merely about business but about creating employment opportunities, fostering economic growth, and improving lives both in Mumbai and in his native Rajasthan. His establishments became symbols of hospitality and inclusiveness, drawing loyal patrons from diverse communities.
Service to Society
Beyond business, he devoted his energy to philanthropy and social welfare. Whenever natural disasters such as floods and droughts struck, or during times of social unrest, he stood by the affected with timely assistance. He worked hand in hand with government institutions like the Municipal Corporation, Police, and the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority to support relief measures.
Inspired by the ideals of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Lal Bahadur Shastri, he celebrated Shastri Jayanti every year at the Adarsh Hotel. His commitment to public welfare earned him recognition from the Government of Maharashtra, which appointed him Justice of the Peace and Special Executive Magistrate.
Advocate of Education and Philanthropy
Though he himself could not pursue formal education, Purshottamdas Purohit believed passionately in empowering the next generation through learning. He contributed generously to the construction of a hostel in Falna, Rajasthan, providing a safe and nurturing environment for students. He also extended financial support to many aspiring learners, ensuring that lack of resources would not be a barrier to education.
In 1989, he established the P. H. Purohit (Rawat Singh) Charitable Trust, dedicated to carrying forward his values of service, charity, and community support. Even today, the trust continues to work in areas of education, social upliftment, and welfare, keeping his legacy alive.
A Stamp of Tribute
The life of Purshottamdas H. Purohit is a story of resilience, patriotism, and compassion. From his humble beginnings to his role in the freedom movement, from building institutions of hospitality to creating pathways for social welfare, he lived as a true karmayogi.
In recognition of his immense contributions, the Department of Posts proudly issues a commemorative postage stamp honoring the life and legacy of Purshottamdas H. Purohit. This stamp is not only a celebration of his extraordinary journey but also a reminder of the values of hard work, sacrifice, and service to humanity that he embodied.
