Raj Bhawan Nainital Stamp – A Tribute to Architectural Grandeur

The Raj Bhawan Nainital Stamp celebrates one of Uttarakhand’s most iconic heritage landmarks, a symbol of colonial history and timeless elegance nestled in the Kumaon hills. Known originally as the Government House, this historic edifice reflects a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty.

A Dual Legacy of Raj Bhawans in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is among the few Indian states to have two Raj Bhawans—one in the state capital Dehradun, and the other in the picturesque hill town of Nainital. The Nainital Raj Bhawan holds special significance, as it was built during the British colonial era when Nainital served as the summer capital of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh).

Architecture Inspired by a Scottish Castle

Designed by architect F.W. Stevens and executive engineer F.O.W. Ortel, the Raj Bhawan was constructed between 1897 and 1899 in the Victorian Gothic style, reminiscent of Scottish castles. Spread over 200 acres, the two-storied mansion boasts 113 rooms.

The construction employed locally sourced stones with Ashlar finishing, while Burma teak and other fine woods were used for interiors. The design stands out for its arched windows, steep roofs, intricate woodwork, and European patterns, making it a masterpiece of colonial architecture in India.

A Residence of Governors and Leaders

During the pre-independence era, Raj Bhawan served as the residence of British Governors of the United Provinces, including Sir Antony MacDonnell, Sir James, Sir John Misten, and Sir Harcourt Butler.

Post-independence, Smt. Sarojini Naidu, the first Governor of Uttar Pradesh, became the first Indian to occupy this historic residence, adding a new chapter to its legacy.

Nature and Recreation within the Estate

The estate includes around 160 acres of forested land, home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Adding to its charm is the 45-acre vintage golf course, established in 1936 and among the oldest in India, affiliated with the Indian Golf Union.

The sprawling lawns, bonsai garden, and rare floral species further enhance the estate’s allure. Today, select areas of the Raj Bhawan are open to visitors, offering guided tours and even a chance to enjoy a game of golf for a nominal fee.

A Heritage Landmark Honoured

With its rich history, serene surroundings, and architectural grandeur, the Raj Bhawan Nainital stands as a proud symbol of Uttarakhand’s heritage. To honour this legacy, the Department of Posts releases the Raj Bhawan Nainital Stamp, a commemorative issue that captures the timeless charm of this historic landmark.

For philatelists and history enthusiasts, the stamp is more than a collectible—it is a tribute to India’s architectural heritage and the enduring legacy of Nainital’s most iconic monument.

The Raj Bhawan Nainital Stamp is not just a token of history but a symbol of elegance and heritage that continues to inspire generations.
