Freedom Fighter, Socialist Icon and Eminent Parliamentarian
Raj Narain was a distinguished freedom fighter, committed socialist, and fearless parliamentarian who played a significant role in India’s political history. Born in 1917 in Motikoat village, Gangapur, in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh, he hailed from the royal family of Varanasi and was directly related to Maharaja Balwant Singh.
After completing his post-graduation and LLB, Raj Narain joined the Socialist Party, where he held several key positions. He was a close associate of Ram Manohar Lohia, who described him as “a person who has the heart of a lion and practices of Gandhi.” Together, they became strong pillars of the socialist movement in India.
Role in the Quit India Movement
During the Quit India Movement of 1942, Raj Narain served as President of the Student Congress and led revolutionary activities in and around the Varanasi district. His intense involvement in the freedom struggle made him a prime target of the British authorities, who announced a reward of Rs. 5,000 for his arrest — dead or alive.
He was imprisoned several times for his active participation in the independence movement, demonstrating unwavering courage and dedication to the nation’s freedom.
Champion of Socialism and Social Justice
A staunch socialist throughout his life, Raj Narain devoted himself to fighting exploitation, injustice, and inequality. His political ideology was deeply rooted in socialism, and he consistently worked for:
- Upliftment of the poor
- Rights of workers and labourers
- Protection of the downtrodden
- Promotion of social equality and economic justice
Because of his close connection with the common people, he earned the affectionate title “Lokbandhu” (Friend of the People).
Distinguished Political Career
Raj Narain’s parliamentary career was long and impactful:
- Elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly (1952–1962)
- First Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly after Independence
- Member of the Rajya Sabha (1966–1972 and 1974–1976)
- Union Minister of Health (1977–1980)
In the historic 1977 General Elections, as a candidate of the Janata Party, he defeated then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from the Rae Bareli constituency — a landmark moment in Indian democracy.
Legacy and Commemoration
Raj Narain passed away on 31 December 1986, leaving behind a legacy of fearless political activism and dedication to democratic values. His life stands as a testament to courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to social justice.
In recognition of his immense contribution to India’s freedom struggle and parliamentary democracy, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on Shri Raj Narain, honoring his enduring legacy as a leader of the masses.
