Rajmata Jijau and the Guiding Force Behind Chhatrapati Shivaji
Jijabai, popularly known as Rajmata Jijau, was the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and one of the most influential women in Indian history. She played a vital role in shaping Shivaji’s character, inspiring him to resist the domination of the Bijapur Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, and helping him establish Maratha sovereignty.
Remembered as the ideal Indian mother, Jijabai became known as “Jija Mata,” a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the power of motherhood to transform society and shape the course of history.
Early Life of Jijabai
Jijabai was born into a noble family and was the daughter of Lakhoji Jadhavrao, an eminent noble in the kingdom of Ahmadnagar. According to the customs of the time, she was married at a young age to Shahaji Bhonsle.
Shahaji Bhonsle later entered the service of the Ahmadnagar kingdom. During this period, the Deccan was witnessing political instability and conflict among the kingdoms of Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, and the Mughal Empire.
Jijabai’s Struggles and Separation from Shivaji
In 1633, when Shivaji was still a young boy, an enemy of Shahaji named Mhaldar Khan deserted to the Mughals. He attacked Ahmadnagar and, out of personal hostility towards Shahaji, betrayed Jijabai to the Mughal forces.
Jijabai was imprisoned in Kondana Fort, which is now known as Sinhgad Fort. However, her loyal servants succeeded in hiding young Shivaji and keeping him safe.
Eventually, peace was restored after the partition of Ahmadnagar between Delhi and Bijapur. Following this settlement, Jijabai was allowed to reunite with her son.
Jijabai’s Influence on Chhatrapati Shivaji
Jijabai had a deep and lasting influence on Shivaji Maharaj. From his childhood, she taught him stories of bravery, sacrifice, and righteousness from ancient Indian scriptures. Through these stories, she instilled in him the values of courage, patriotism, justice, and self-respect.
She also emphasized the importance of martial training and encouraged Shivaji to prepare himself for the great mission she envisioned for him.
Inspired by his mother’s teachings, Shivaji brought together the Mavalas of the Pune region and gradually built a dedicated army. With this force, he challenged the Kingdom of Bijapur and later fought against the mighty Mughal Empire.
Throughout Shivaji’s rise, Jijabai remained one of his closest advisors and strongest sources of support. Her wisdom and determination guided him in his struggle to establish the Maratha Empire.
Jijabai and the Rise of the Maratha Empire
The rise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the establishment of the Maratha Empire remain among the most important chapters in Indian history. Behind Shivaji’s victories and achievements stood Jijabai, whose influence shaped both the leader and the kingdom he created.
Although she remained away from the battlefield, Jijabai was the silent force behind Shivaji’s success. Her ideals, guidance, and unwavering belief in her son gave him the confidence to fight for Maratha independence.
In May 1674, Shivaji Maharaj was crowned in a grand coronation ceremony at his capital, Rajgad. This moment marked the realization of Jijabai’s lifelong dream of seeing her son establish an independent Maratha kingdom.
Sadly, only a short time after Shivaji’s coronation, Jijabai passed away.
Legacy of Rajmata Jijau
Jijabai’s life remains an enduring example of the strength and influence of motherhood. She demonstrated how a mother’s values, determination, and vision can shape not only the life of her child but also the destiny of an entire nation.
Rajmata Jijau is remembered with great respect as the mother of Shivaji Maharaj and as one of the greatest women in Indian history. Her legacy continues to inspire generations across India.
To honor her extraordinary contribution, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on Jijabai, also known as Rajmata Jijau, the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the guiding force behind the Maratha Empire.
