Early Life

Ramgopal Maheshwari, fondly known as Babuji, was born on 20 November 1911 at Mandolai near Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Influence of Mahatma Gandhi and Freedom Movement

Deeply inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Ramgopal Maheshwari joined the freedom movement at a young age. He practised simple living and wore khadi throughout his life. He was also influenced by Shri Krishnadas Jajoo, a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi.

Journalistic Career

At the age of 22, Maheshwari began editing and publishing ‘Maheshwari’, the mouthpiece of the Maheshwari community, marking the beginning of his career in journalism. He later took charge of the biweekly publication ‘Nav Rajasthan’, originally started by Shri Brijlal Biyani at Akola.

On 8 February 1934, he founded the biweekly newspaper ‘Nava Bharat’ in Nagpur, which soon became a daily and expanded to several cities. Under his leadership, Nava Bharat emerged as a powerful voice of the Indian freedom struggle.

Role in the Freedom Struggle

Ramgopal Maheshwari used journalism as a tool for national awakening. His active participation in the freedom movement led to house arrest in 1939. During the Quit India Movement, he was imprisoned in Nagpur Central Jail.

Social Reforms and Women’s Empowerment

A strong advocate of the Hindi language, Maheshwari was deeply involved in social reform. He worked tirelessly to eliminate regressive customs and was a passionate supporter of women’s emancipation. Along with his wife, Kaushalya Devi, he actively opposed the purdah system and harsh rituals associated with death, contributing significantly to the upliftment of women.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of his contributions:

  • He was awarded the ‘Samaj Shiromani’ Award by the Maheshwari community in 1994.
  • He received the ‘Patrakar Shiromani’ Award from Pt. Makhanlal University of Journalism, Bhopal, for his commitment to ethical journalism.

Demise

Ramgopal Maheshwari passed away on 13 September 1999, leaving behind a legacy of principled journalism, social reform, and patriotic service.
