A Hero of the 1971 Indo-Pak War
Lance Naik Albert Ekka was one of India’s bravest soldiers, remembered for his extraordinary courage and sacrifice during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. His actions on the battlefield exemplify the highest traditions of the Indian Armed Forces.
Role of the Indian Armed Forces After Independence
After India gained independence, the Indian Armed Forces took on the crucial responsibility of defending the nation’s sovereignty. From safeguarding borders to countering external aggression, soldiers displayed unmatched bravery, leading to the institution of prestigious gallantry awards like the Param Vir Chakra, the highest honor for valor.
Albert Ekka’s Heroic Battle at Gangasagar
During the 1971 war for the liberation of Bangladesh, Lance Naik Albert Ekka served in the 14th Battalion of the Brigade of the Guards. He was part of a major assault on enemy defenses at Gangasagar on the Eastern Front.
Despite facing intense shelling and heavy small arms fire from well-fortified enemy positions, Ekka advanced fearlessly. Engaging in close combat, he charged enemy bunkers with complete disregard for his own safety and successfully neutralized key machine gun positions that posed a serious threat to his unit.
Supreme Sacrifice and Recognition
His courageous actions significantly reduced casualties among his comrades and ensured the successful capture of the objective. However, he later succumbed to the injuries sustained during the battle.
For his unmatched bravery, determination, and selfless service, Lance Naik Albert Ekka was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, honoring his supreme sacrifice for the nation.
Legacy and Commemoration
Albert Ekka’s legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike. His story stands as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and devotion to duty.
To honor such gallant heroes, India issued a commemorative postage stamp as part of the “50 Years of the Republic of India: Gallantry Award Winners” series, paying tribute to the brave soldiers who have safeguarded the nation with their lives.
