A Legend of Courage
Subedar and Honorary Captain Karam Singh is celebrated as one of India’s most valiant soldiers, known for his extraordinary bravery during the 1948 operations in Jammu and Kashmir. His heroic actions set a benchmark for courage and leadership in the Indian Army.
Role of the Indian Armed Forces After Independence
After independence, the Indian Armed Forces assumed the critical responsibility of defending the nation’s borders. In recognition of exceptional bravery and sacrifice, the Government of India instituted gallantry awards, with the Param Vir Chakra being the highest honor for valor.
Heroic Stand at Richmar Gali
During the 1948 conflict in Jammu and Kashmir, Karam Singh, then a Lance Naik, was commanding a section at Richmar Gali, a strategically important location near Tithwal. The enemy launched intense artillery attacks, destroying bunkers and attempting to regain control of the area.
Despite being wounded, Karam Singh displayed remarkable determination. He moved from bunker to bunker, encouraging his men, tending to the injured, and motivating them to continue fighting under heavy fire.
Turning the Tide of Battle
When the enemy managed to break through and gain a foothold in the platoon area, Karam Singh acted swiftly. Leading a small group of soldiers, he launched a fierce counterattack. In a close hand-to-hand combat, he successfully drove the enemy out, regaining control and preventing them from recapturing the crucial position at Tithwal.
Recognition and Legacy
For his exceptional courage, leadership, and indomitable spirit, Karam Singh was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, becoming the first living recipient of India’s highest gallantry award.
Commemoration
His bravery continues to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike. To honor such gallant heroes, a commemorative postage stamp was issued as part of the “50 Years of the Republic of India: Gallantry Award Winners” series, paying tribute to the extraordinary sacrifices made by India’s armed forces.
