Introduction
Saint Dnyaneshwar was a great saint-poet of the 13th century and one of the most revered spiritual figures of Maharashtra. He belonged to the Nath tradition and played a vital role in laying the foundation of mysticism and the Bhakti movement in the region.
Literary Contribution
Saint Dnyaneshwar is best known for writing the Dnyaneshwari, a simple Marathi commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. He composed this remarkable work of 9033 stanzas at the young age of fifteen. Through this text, he explained the philosophy of the Gita in the language of common people and made spiritual wisdom accessible to society. It is regarded as the first book to translate the Bhagavad Gita from Sanskrit into Marathi.
Philosophy and Teachings
Dnyaneshwar preached universal welfare for all humanity, beyond distinctions of caste, creed, nation, or race. He opposed empty rituals and taught that the true purpose of life is Bhakti, or the realization of divine love in this life.
He also advocated the doctrine of Chidvilasvad or Sphoortivad, which teaches that the whole world is filled with divine light. According to this view, one’s daily work or profession itself becomes an act of worship.
Social Impact
His teachings inspired equality among all sections of society and uplifted the downtrodden and outcastes. The Bhakti tradition of Maharashtra is deeply rooted in the spiritual vision of Saint Dnyaneshwar.
Other Works
Apart from the Dnyaneshwari, he is also credited with several important works, including:
- Amrutanubhav
- Changdev Pasashti
- Bhangas
- Haripath
These writings have been translated into many languages such as English, French, and Spanish.
Philatelic Recognition

Legacy
Saint Dnyaneshwar remains an enduring symbol of devotion, wisdom, and social reform. His teachings continue to inspire millions and his literary works hold a permanent place in Indian spiritual heritage.
