Poet-Saint of Maharashtra
India has a rich tradition of saints and mystics who have profoundly influenced its spiritual and social life. Among them, Sant Eknath holds a distinguished place. He was one of the celebrated “Great Quartet” of Vithoba’s poet-devotees, alongside Jnaneshwar, Namdev and Tukaram.
Early Life and Spiritual Awakening
Signs of extraordinary talent were visible in Eknath from a very young age. It is believed that he had mastered ancient scriptures by the age of eight. A mystical experience during meditation led him on a remarkable journey to meet his गुरु, Janardhan Swamy at Devgad. Recognising his spiritual potential, the guru accepted him as a disciple.
Following his गुरु’s guidance, Eknath undertook pilgrimages to various sacred places before eventually returning to his native town of Paithan.
Literary Contributions
Sant Eknath made significant contributions to devotional literature. His major works include:
- Eknathi Bhagwat
- Bhavartha Ramayana
He also prepared a scholarly edition of the Jnaneshwari, demonstrating his deep knowledge and dedication to preserving spiritual texts.
Social Reform and Teachings
Like many saints of the Bhakti Movement, Eknath combined spirituality with social reform. He strongly opposed untouchability and discrimination, promoting equality and compassion. Despite facing opposition and ostracism from orthodox sections of society, he continued his mission with unwavering determination.
Through bhajans and kirtans, he conveyed that spiritual growth is possible even while living an ordinary life. His teachings emphasised devotion, humility and universal brotherhood.
Legacy
Sant Eknath’s writings and teachings brought spiritual awakening to common people and helped reform societal practices. His work continues to inspire generations with its message of equality, devotion and inner transformation.
Commemoration
In recognition of his immense contribution to spirituality and literature, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of this great poet-saint of India.
