Sarangadhar Das – The Gadjat Gandhi
Sarangadhar Das (1886–1957) was a revolutionary leader, scientist, parliamentarian, and prolific writer who played a pivotal role in Odisha’s struggle against princely oppression. Fondly remembered as “Gadjat Gandhi”, he spearheaded the Prajamandal Movement in several princely states of Odisha, becoming a symbol of people’s resistance and reform.
Early Life and Education
Born on 17 October 1886 at Harekrushnapur in Dhenkanal, Odisha, Sarangadhar Das overcame hardships after losing his father at the age of 11. Encouraged by his mother, he pursued education with determination. He completed his matriculation at Dhenkanal Garh High School, graduated in Science from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, and later studied Chemistry at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. He also specialized in Sugar Technology at the University of California, Berkeley.
Although he aspired to establish industries rather than seek government service, his vision of setting up a sugar factory in Dhenkanal was crushed by the ruling king, Shankar Pratap. This bitter experience convinced him that true development was impossible under feudal rule, inspiring his role in the Gadjat Revolution.
Leader of the Prajamandal Movement
To organize resistance, Sarangadhar Das founded Praja Samilani, encouraging people to form Prajamandal committees across Dhenkanal and beyond. The movement soon spread throughout Odisha, challenging oppressive rulers and laying the foundation for democratic governance in the region. He also rose to national prominence, serving as Vice President of the All India Prajamandal Committee.
Political Career
Sarangadhar Das’s political journey reflected his commitment to democracy and social justice.
- 1946–1949: Member of Odisha’s Provincial Legislative Council.
- Advocated for the merger of princely states with Odisha and demanded responsible governance.
- Post-independence, he left the Congress Party to join the Socialist Party, later becoming Chairman of the Socialist Party (Utkal) and Deputy Leader of the Praja Socialist Party.
- 1951: Elected to the Lok Sabha from Dhenkanal-West-Cuttack.
He also actively participated in the All-Orissa State’s People’s Movement, championed the cause of tribal and marginalized communities, and worked through national platforms such as the All-India States People’s Conference and the All-India Congress Committee.
Writer and Visionary
Apart from his political activism, Sarangadhar Das was a prolific writer. He edited the journal Krushak and authored works like:
- The Development of Sugar Industry in India
- Bikaner – A Political & Economic Survey
Through his writings, he highlighted the struggles of the masses and his vision for an industrially advanced India.
